Jan Karski Award for Moral Courage Event

Washington, D.C. November 8, 2004, The Foundation for Moral Courage honored Ms. Ingrid Betancourt with the Jan Karski Award for Moral Courage.

The event was co-hosted by Mr. Jean David Levitte, French Ambassador in Washington, D.C. and Mr. Luis Alberto Moreno, Colombian Ambassador in Washington, D.C.
Principal address was given by former President of Colombia Alfonso Lopez Michelsen (read the article, El Tiempo).
Additional words of support were sent by James LeMoyne, Special Advisor to the Secretary General of U.N Kofi Annan.

The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.

The Foundation also recognized Karin Hayes and Victoria Bruce producers of the winning documentary reflecting acts of moral courage.

    Karin Hayes (producer/director) and Victoria Bruce (producer/director) of The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.
    Victoria Bruce, who had no experience in filmmaking, called Karin and suggested that the two head to Colombia to follow the campaign of a controversial presidential candidate. After hearing Ingrid Betancourt 's story, Karin grew passionate about the project and signed on. A week later, Ingrid was kidnapped while campaigning, and Karin and Victoria jumped into action, totally in the dark as to how the documentary would unfold.

     THE KIDNAPPING OF INGRID BETANCOURT has received the following awards:
     - Best Television Documentary, Imagen Foundation Award, 2004
     - Special Mention" from the Amnesty International-DOEN Award at the International Film Festival Amsterdam 2003
     - Orson Welles Award for Best First Film at the Tiburon International Film Festival 2004 (Tiburon, CA)
     - Best Documentary at Festivalito 2004 (La Palma, Canarry Islands)

Latest foundation Film, "The PeaceBuilders" is now available. This 27-minute program edited for use in high school classrooms, is focused on the efforts of ethnic Serbian and Croatian volunteers in Eastern Croatia.
This area had suffered four years of Yugoslav army occupation in the early 1990's, overcoming the ethnic hostilities which characterized the earlier war years in the theme of the Peace Builders.
This film emphasizes the courage required for volunteers to enter into conflict resolution activities.
